What does “don” mean before a Mexican name?
Mexican Spanish (and Spanish broadly) uses don before a first name as a respectful address: don Paco, don Ramón, don José. It signals age, social standing, or just everyday respect for an older man. The female version is doña. Unlike English “Mr.” or “Sir,” don/doña attaches to a first name, not a surname, and shows up more in informal speech than in writing.
The clip features a heated workplace argument with don Paco over an orange. The address form makes the conflict feel different than it would in English: deference is baked in even when speakers raise their voices. You can be furious at don Paco and still respect his place in the order.
