Does Spanish grammatical gender change how you think?
Spanish assigns every noun a grammatical gender — el puente (bridge) is masculine, la mesa (table) is feminine — with no logical reason behind most of the assignments. A well-known study found this isn’t just grammar trivia: German speakers, whose word for “bridge” (die Brücke) is feminine, tend to describe bridges as elegant or beautiful, while Spanish speakers, whose el puente is masculine, reach for sturdy or strong instead.
The effect is genuinely debated — some follow-up studies have failed to replicate it — so treat it as a thought-provoking possibility rather than settled fact. What’s not in doubt is the practical takeaway for learners: a noun’s gender in Spanish isn’t optional decoration, it’s baked into how the word is used, and possibly into how it’s imagined.
