What does 'dugnad' mean in Norwegian?
Dugnad is Norway’s volunteer-work ritual. Neighbors, the idrettslag (sports club), the borettslag (housing co-op), or the school PTA call one; everyone shows up with rakes, paintbrushes, or coffee thermoses and gets a job done together. Pay isn’t part of it; kaffe og kake (coffee and cake) is.
Here the host extends dugnad into a metaphor. Mads, diagnosed with a serious illness, drops out of business school BI and trains as a nurse to give back: « Du har lyst å gi noe tilbake » (you want to give something back). The host jokes that a BI-educated dugnad would have been the first one Norway felt sympathy for. Vi trenger sårt sykepleiere (we badly need nurses).
