What does “¿vale?” mean in Spanish?
¿vale? is a little tag that Spanish speakers — especially in Spain — add to the end of a sentence. It works like “okay?” or “got it?”, checking that the other person is following. It is not really a question you need to answer; it just marks the end of a thought. Once you hear it as a check-in rather than a real question, fast explanations start to feel much easier to follow.
In the clip: “tenemos una pausa para comer de una a tres, ¿vale?” — “we have a lunch break from one to three, okay?” She is explaining a school timetable and drops ¿vale? to confirm you are keeping up. “vale” on its own also means “okay / sounds good” as an answer: “¿Quedamos a las cinco?” — “Vale.” More examples: - “Te lo dejo aquí, ¿vale?” — “I’ll leave it here for you, okay?” - “Primero esto y luego lo otro, ¿vale?” — “First this, then the other thing, got it?” You hear ¿vale? often in Spain at the end of sentences. In much of Latin America people use “¿sí?” or “¿de acuerdo?” in the same spot. The “v” sounds soft, close to a “b”.
