What does “corneta” mean in Colombian Spanish?
A dictionary will tell you corneta means “bugle,” a brass instrument — but hand a Colombian parent a bag of cornetas and they’ll picture something much less musical: the loud plastic horns and noisemakers sold at parties and street stalls, the kind kids blast nonstop until an adult regrets ever paying for them. The word shifts by country: in Venezuela, corneta usually means a car horn or a loudspeaker, while in Colombia it more often points to a megaphone-style noisemaker or toy horn.
