What does “el suelo” mean in Spanish?

el suelo
Spanish everyday noun
The floor / the ground — sit en el suelo means “on the floor”

El suelo means “the floor” or “the ground.” Beginners often only learn el piso, but in Spain suelo is the everyday word for the floor you walk on, while piso there usually means a flat or apartment. So sentarse en el suelo means “to sit on the floor.” It is a simple, high-use noun that comes up at home, in class, and outdoors.

The clip contrasts la silla (the chair) and el suelo (the floor): me siento en la silla versus sitting en el suelo. Remember the regional twist: in much of Latin America piso can also mean floor, but suelo is understood everywhere and is the safe choice for “ground.”
