What does “Chespirito” mean, and where does the name come from?

Chespirito is the stage name of Roberto Gómez Bolaños, creator and star of El Chavo del 8. A film director nicknamed him “Shakespearito” — a diminutive of Shakespeare — for his knack for writing comedy, and Gómez Bolaños later said he “hispanicized it” into Chespirito: the Spanish pronunciation of “Shakespeare” (cheh-speer) plus the affectionate ending -ito, “little.”

That -ito ending is doing real work: Spanish speakers attach it to names and nouns constantly to mean “small” or “dear” — Juanito, cafecito, un segundito. Here it turns “Shakespeare” into an affectionate joke about a “little Shakespeare,” which is exactly how the name has stuck for generations of Latin American viewers.
