Why do Mexicans say “mande” instead of “qué”?

When someone calls your name in Mexico, the classic answer isn’t ¿qué? — it’s ¿mande?, literally “command (me),” the usted form of mandar, “to order.” It covers “yes?”, “pardon?” and “say that again?”, and in many Mexican families answering with a bare ¿qué? still earns a scolding for rudeness. It is one of the fastest ways to sound Mexican.

The prank clip catches it as pure reflex — a sister, called from the other room, answers simply “Mande.” A folk story ties the word to colonial servility, but linguists push back: usted mande was an old courtesy formula used among equals. Younger Mexicans increasingly say ¿qué? or ¿cómo?; in Spain you’d hear ¿cómo? or ¿diga? instead.
