What does “天辺” (teppen) mean in Japanese?

天辺 (teppen)
Japanese word for "the very top"
“the peak,” “the very top” — of a building, a mountain, or a career

天辺 is the highest possible point of something — the top of a tower, a mountain’s summit, the crown of your head. It works just as well figuratively, for reaching the top of a field or profession. In this clip a mother tells her son she wants him to become an elite working at the top of Arasaka Tower — and he promises, then eventually makes it, all the way to the very top.

The scene is from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (episodes 2 and 10), where David Martinez’s mother dreams of him working at the pinnacle of the corporation Arasaka — a wish that becomes one of the anime’s most quoted, bittersweet lines. 天辺 pairs naturally with の: 山の天辺 (“the mountain’s summit”), 世界の天辺 (“the top of the world”).
