What does “se pá” mean in Brazilian Portuguese slang?
In São Paulo slang, se pá means “maybe” or “who knows” — nothing to do with pá, “shovel.” It emerged in 1980s São Paulo rap and funk, when youth culture reshaped standard Portuguese into something faster and more clipped. One theory traces pá to the French je sais pas (“I don’t know”), worn down to a single syllable as it crossed into Brazilian slang.
