What does “desliga você” mean in Portuguese?
In Brazilian Portuguese, desligar means to hang up the phone — and desliga você is the command “you hang up.” It’s the line every couple knows from the no-you-hang-up standoff, when neither side wants to be the first to end the call. The verb is the opposite of ligar (“to call”), so the same root just flips: connect, then disconnect.
Desligar is des- (a reversal prefix, like English “un-”) plus ligar (“to connect, to turn on, to call”), from Latin disligāre, “to untie.” That pairing is the payoff: ligar para alguém is “to call someone,” and desligar is to hang up — connect, then cut the connection. The same des-/ligar logic covers gadgets too: liga a TV (“turn the TV on”), desliga a luz (“turn the light off”). In the clip a couple plays out the classic ritual — “Quem vai desligar? Desliga você.” (“Who’s going to hang up? You hang up.”) — before the call sours into a breakup.
