What does “Maisonettewohnung” mean in German?
On her apartment tour, she points at a big hole in the floor and a staircase and says that’s because it’s a “Maisonettewohnung.” She’s not bragging — she even jokes about almost falling down the stairs. The word just means her flat covers two floors, so she climbs her own indoor staircase instead of stepping into a building hallway to reach the next level.
She says: “Und zwar ist hier eine Treppe, weil das ist eine Maisonettewohnung.” — “There’s a staircase here because this is a two-floor flat.” The word comes from French and means “little house.” Germans use it for any flat that spans two floors inside one building. More examples: - “Wir suchen eine Maisonettewohnung.” — “We’re looking for a two-floor flat.” - “Die Maisonette hat eine Treppe ins Schlafzimmer.” — “The maisonette has a staircase up to the bedroom.” It sounds fancy in listings, but really it just tells you the flat has its own indoor stairs.
