What does “aufs falsche Pferd gesetzt zu haben” mean in German?
At a debate between Hannover’s mayor candidates, the property people in the room won’t name a favourite. Why? “Dann könnte ja die Gefahr bestehen, nach der Wahl aufs falsche Pferd gesetzt zu haben” — after the vote, they might find they backed the wrong horse. German uses the same horse-racing image as English: you bet on a runner who loses. So the careful property people stay quiet and wait to see who actually wins.
Spoken line: “Dann könnte ja die Gefahr bestehen, nach der Wahl aufs falsche Pferd gesetzt zu haben.” — “Then there could be a danger of having backed the wrong horse after the election.” The full idiom is “auf das falsche Pferd setzen” (setzen auf = to bet on something/someone). “Aufs” is just a short form of “auf das.” More examples: - “Mit dieser Firma hat er aufs falsche Pferd gesetzt.” — He backed the wrong horse with this company. - “Wir wollen nicht aufs falsche Pferd setzen.” — We don’t want to back the wrong horse. - “Diesmal hat sie aufs richtige Pferd gesetzt.” — This time she backed the right horse. Usage note: it fits business, sports, and politics, as in this clip. The opposite is “aufs richtige Pferd setzen.” Often said with regret when a choice has already gone wrong — or might.
