Why does German “Zeugnis” (report card) come from the word for “testify”?

On report card day, Mia’s family calls it simply ihr Zeugnis. The word comes from zeugen, an old verb originally meaning “to bring forth” or “produce” — which split over centuries into two very different modern meanings: zeugen as “to testify” (giving witness in court) and zeugen as “to father/conceive” a child. A Zeugnis, then, is literally your teacher’s official testimony about you.

The same root survives in bezeugen (“to attest, bear witness”) and Zeuge (“witness,” as in a courtroom). So when Mia’s mother jokes about being nervous over “unser” Zeugnis (“our” report card, not just Mia’s), she’s leaning into the same idea the word encodes: a report card is testimony the school gives about a child — for better or worse, shared by the whole family.
