설마 (seolma) is Korean for “no way — tell me it isn’t so.” Thrown out as a one-word gasp, it registers shock at bad or unbelievable news. But it hides a grammatical quirk: 설마 leans a whole sentence toward a negative answer, so a full 설마 line practically begs “that can’t be true, right?” It’s hope and dread in two syllables — you reach for it when you’d rather the answer be no.

Because 설마 anticipates “no,” it naturally pairs with negative-leaning endings: 설마 비가 오겠어? (“Surely it won’t rain?”), 설마 그럴 리가 없어 (“There’s no way that’s true”). Standing alone, 설마! is the K-drama staple for the instant a secret drops. Add -요 for politeness and you get 설마요. It’s native Korean, not Sino-Korean, and works as both an adverb and an interjection. Here it snaps out on the bus after a passenger insists the banned drink is already “all finished” — a quick, incredulous “yeah, right.”
