What does “抓包” (zhuabao) mean in Chinese slang?
In this clip, an employee tells the boss she “has something come up” (有事儿) and can’t make it — the classic vague excuse for skipping out. 抓包 (zhuābāo) is the word for what happens next: getting caught. It literally means “grab the bag” (from catching a thief with the stolen goods), but today it’s used for catching anyone in a lie, a bad excuse, or a scheme — no actual bag required.
抓包 works for small, everyday catches — a boss catching a flimsy excuse, a friend catching a fib — not just crime. You’ll also see it flipped around as 被抓包 (bèi zhuābāo, “got caught”), with the person caught as the subject: 我被抓包了, “I got caught.” It’s casual, spoken Mandarin — save it for gossip, not formal writing.
