What does “stappen gaan” mean in Dutch?
Gaan stappen is the everyday Dutch phrase for a night out — hitting the bars and clubs. It comes from stappen (“to step/walk”), but in informal speech the stepping is figurative: you’re stepping out into the night. The clip’s interviewee sums up a generational shift in one line: “het stappen is gewoon minder geworden” — going out has simply declined — as Renesse’s last disco prepares to close.
