What does “géniteur” mean in French?
Le géniteur is a cold, clinical word for the man who biologically fathered you — the sire, the source of the DNA, and nothing more. French keeps a sharp three-way split: géniteur is pure biology, père adds the legal and emotional weight of fatherhood, and papa is the warm, everyday “dad.” Choosing géniteur over papa is itself a statement about who really raised you.
That distinction does real emotional work here: a child can keep calling the man who raised him papa long after learning he wasn’t the géniteur. The word comes from Latin genitor, “the one who begets,” and it’s the same root behind génération and progéniture (offspring) — family by biology, not by bond.
