What does 'tréma' mean in Czech?
Tréma is the Czech word for stage fright. It came in from Latin tremor (trembling) via theater jargon and now covers anything from a school recital to a job interview. The flavor matters: tréma points at the buzzy, hands-cold, voice-quavers feeling, not generic anxiety. Doctors talk úzkost, actors talk tréma.
Czech performers often frame tréma as fuel. In this clip, choreographer Yemi A.D. says: « mám vždycky trému, ale je to vlastně dobře, protože ta tréma mě vždycky vybičuje k tomu, abych byl jako na špičkách » (I always get tréma, but actually it’s good, because tréma whips me up so I stay on point). The nerves do the work.
