What does “بالعافية” mean in Egyptian Arabic?
In Egyptian Arabic, بالعافية (bil-ʿāfya) means you barely did something, or only managed it through sheer physical or mental effort. The root عافية normally means health or wellbeing, but Egyptian colloquial speech flipped it: doing something “with your whole health” became doing it against all odds, by the skin of your teeth. It captures that exhausted, just-barely feeling English speakers reach for with “barely” or “hardly.”
In the clip, a boy arrives at his favourite waterpark to find every slide bone-dry. He tries to fix things, then gives up and crawls through a dark tunnel on his hands and feet — and the narrator describes his sliding as كان بالعافيه بيتزحلق: “he was barely sliding.” That single line makes the word unforgettable — no water, no momentum, just pure grit. Use it whenever something barely happens or costs everything you have: بالعافية وصلنا — “we barely made it.”
