What is a “Cumberland sausage”?
Cumberland sausage is a British pork sausage from the historic county of Cumberland in northwest England (now part of Cumbria). It’s traditionally sold in a long coil, not in separate links, and is heavily peppered with black pepper, sage, and a touch of nutmeg. The European Union granted Cumberland sausage Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in 2011, meaning only sausages made in Cumbria using the traditional method can carry the name. After Brexit, the United Kingdom kept the protection under its own UK PGI scheme.
In this clip, a British parent serves sausage and mash (sausages with mashed potatoes) and shows the kids how “a proper Brit” eats it: lumpy mash, Cumberland sausages, fried onions on top.
