What does “take its natural course” mean in English?
When we say something can “take its natural course,” we mean: don’t fight it, don’t force it to stop — just let it move through and finish on its own. You’ll hear this about illness, grief, arguments, and even storms. In this clip, a psychologist uses it for painful emotions: stop blocking them, and they will pass by themselves.
In the clip, Dr Julie explains that when you stop trying to push a painful feeling away, “you allow it to take its natural course. And over time, the emotion clears.” The phrase is common in medicine: “The doctor said to rest and let the virus take its natural course.” Or in relationships: “They argued a lot, but we let things take their natural course.” The word “course” here means a path or process from start to finish — not a class or a meal. You’ll hear this in everyday conversation, news, and medical advice.
