What does “anzi” mean in Italian?
Anzi is the little word Italians drop in to walk back or sharpen what they just said. After a negative statement it intensifies: “Non mi piacciono le olive, anzi le detesto” — I don’t like olives; in fact, I hate them. After a positive one it flips the plan: “Stasera scrivo a Barbara, anzi le telefono ora” — tonight I’ll write to Barbara; actually, I’ll call her now. One word covers both “even more so” and “on the contrary.”
The trick is reading whether anzi amplifies or reverses, and that follows the polarity of the first clause: negative clause, it doubles down; affirmative clause, it overrides. Mastering anzi makes speech sound spontaneous and self-editing rather than scripted — exactly how natives think aloud.
