What does “eifersüchtig” mean in German?
When Ute mentions that Christian wants to meet her at the station, she turns to her friend and asks straight out: “bist du eifersüchtig auf mich?” — are you jealous of me? It’s a direct, slightly teasing question about feelings. Brigitte says no, she isn’t, even though she and Christian get along fine. So “eifersüchtig” is what you feel when you worry someone you like is interested in another person.
Spoken line: “Sag mir, Brigitte, bist du eifersüchtig auf mich?” — “Tell me, Brigitte, are you jealous of me?” You say “eifersüchtig auf” + the person or thing you feel jealous about: - “Er ist eifersüchtig auf ihren neuen Freund.” — He’s jealous of her new boyfriend. - “Sei nicht eifersüchtig, wir sind nur Freunde.” — Don’t be jealous, we’re just friends. - “Sie wurde eifersüchtig, als er mit jemand anderem tanzte.” — She got jealous when he danced with someone else. The noun is “die Eifersucht” (jealousy). You’ll hear it in everyday conversation between friends as well as in more serious talks about relationships. Stress falls on the first part: EI-fer-süch-tig.
