What does “leagăn” mean in Romanian?
Leagăn is the playground swing — the seat you push off and glide on. But the very same word means a baby’s cradle, the little bed you rock back and forth. One word covers both because both do the same thing: they sway. So a Romanian child grows up rocked in a leagăn and later plays on a leagăn, the motion linking the cradle to the swing across a whole life.
The thread is the verb a legăna, “to rock, to sway” — leagăn is the thing that does the rocking, whether it holds a baby or a kid. That’s also why a lullaby is a cântec de leagăn, literally a “cradle song.” The word is old and a little mysterious: dictionaries link it to a legăna and trace it back through Vulgar Latin, with some treating it as a pre-Latin substrate word. In the clip the friends spot one in the park — un leagăn! — and hop on to feel like kids again.
