What does “Jak ci minął dzień?” mean, and why “minął” not “był”?

This whole clip is the question and answer: “Jak ci minął dzień?” — “How was your day?” Polish doesn’t ask how your day “was”; it asks how it minął, “passed” or “went by,” with ci, “to you,” tucked in as the dative pronoun who experienced it.

Drop minąć into other daily-life questions and the same logic holds: Jak minęła podróż? (“How was the trip?”), Jak minął weekend? (“How was the weekend?”). It’s one of the most useful all-purpose “how did X go” verbs in conversational Polish — once you have ci minął, you can ask about almost anything with a beginning and an end.
