What does “ragnatela” mean in Italian?
Ragnatela means a spider’s web. It’s two everyday words pushed together: ragno, the spider, and tela, which means cloth, canvas, or any woven sheet. So the web is literally the spider’s “weave.” The same tela shows up where a painter stretches a canvas, and it traces back to the Latin verb for “to weave.” Once you hear the two halves, the long word stops looking hard.
The speaker breaks it open: “il ragno costruisce la ragnatela ragna tela è la tela del ragno” — the spider builds the ragnatela, which is the cloth of the spider. Notice the small twist he points out: it isn’t ragno-tela but ragna-tela, the first part softened where the two words join. Tela comes from Latin texere, “to weave” (the same root behind “textile”); ragno comes from Latin araneus, “spider.” Beyond the bug, a ragnatela can also describe a tangle of schemes set up to trap someone, the way a web traps insects.
