What does “della frutta” mean in Italian?

della frutta
Italian word-building
In Italian, “some fruit” is “della frutta” — the little word “di” plus “the” does the work of “some.”

To say “some” of something in Italian, you don’t add a separate word like English does. You join “di” (of) with “the”: di + la frutta becomes della frutta, “some fruit.” The ending changes to match the noun, so it’s delle mele for “some apples” and del pane for “some bread.” That small built-in “di” is what carries the meaning “some,” even though nothing in the phrase looks like the English word.

You hear it in a quick shopping exchange: “Vuoi anche della frutta?” (“Do you want some fruit too?”), answered with “prendiamo delle mele e delle banane” (“let’s get some apples and some bananas”). The forms come from “di” merging with the definite article: di + la = della, di + le = delle, di + il = del, di + lo = dello. So della frutta literally reads like “of-the fruit,” but Italians use it to mean an unspecified amount — “some.” It works much like French “de la / des.” In everyday speech you can also drop it entirely (Vuoi frutta?), but the della/delle version is the natural, friendly way to offer a portion at the market.
