Why is dark chocolate called “fondente” in Italian?

Italian does not say “dark” chocolate — it says “melting” chocolate. Cioccolato fondente comes from the verb fondere, “to melt,” so the name praises how the bar dissolves smoothly rather than its colour. Fondente is the present participle (the -ente “doing” form), the chocolate-that-melts. It is the kitchen default for baking, and the standard contrast to cioccolato al latte, milk chocolate.

That -ente / -ante ending turns a verb into an adjective all over Italian: from bollire (to boil) comes bollente (boiling hot), from seguire (to follow) seguente (following), from divertire comes divertente (fun, “amusing”). Spot the pattern and you can decode dozens of adjectives from the verbs hiding inside them.
