What does “Schwein haben” mean in German?
Schwein is simply the word for “pig,” but Schwein haben — literally “to have pig” — means to get lucky, especially to scrape out of a close call. Da hast du aber Schwein gehabt! is “Wow, you got lucky there!” The twist is that a pig, elsewhere a German insult, here signals fortune: it points back to a time when owning a pig meant food, income, and security through the winter.
One common explanation links it to medieval contests where the worst competitor was handed a piglet as a consolation prize — a bit like today’s wooden spoon. Losing the game, you still went home with a valuable animal, so “having pig” came to mean unexpected luck. The same warmth survives in the Glücksschwein, the little lucky-pig charm Germans still give at New Year.
