What does “Zeitlupe” mean in German?
German usually reaches for Zeitlupe rather than “slow motion” — literally a “time magnifying-glass.” The word fuses Zeit (“time”) and Lupe (“magnifying glass”), and the image is perfect: slowing footage down is like holding a lens over time so every detail swells into view. You’ll almost always meet it as in Zeitlupe, “in slow motion” — exactly how the clip replays the gymnastics move so you can catch the twist mid-air.
A Lupe is the handheld magnifying glass you’d use to read fine print, so Zeitlupe literally magnifies time rather than space. It has a natural opposite: Zeitraffer, “time-lapse,” from raffen (“to gather up, snatch together”) — where time is bunched up instead of stretched out. The pair shows off German at its most vivid: abstract ideas like fast and slow rebuilt as small, physical pictures you can actually see.
