Die Finger und Hände auf Deutsch erklärt

What does “Zeigefinger” mean in German?
Zeigefinger is the German word for index finger — but unlike English, it tells you exactly what the finger does. It is built from zeigen (“to point” or “to show”) + Finger, making it literally “the pointing finger.” That compound logic is one of German’s most learner-friendly features: the word itself is its own definition. Once you see it, dozens of other German compound nouns start to feel just as transparent.
The clip demonstrates the payoff live: after introducing der Zeigefinger, the speaker immediately uses it in action — ich zeige auf den Ring, ich zeige auf meine Hand, ich zeige auf den Tisch (“I point at the ring / my hand / the table”). Hearing zeigen in the compound and then hearing it again as a verb in the same breath makes the connection impossible to miss. The same root appears in Anzeige (display, advertisement), vorzeigen (to present/show), and Zeiger (clock hand or pointer) — all built around the act of showing or pointing.
