What does “Riti” mean in Swiss German?
A native German speaker hears Riti, is told it belongs on a playground, and still draws a blank — because there is no trace of this word in standard German. Riti is a Swiss German word for a swing, from the dialect verb riite (related to reiten, “to ride”) — which originally meant simply “to move or glide,” fitting a swing’s swaying motion. Swiss dialects have a whole patchwork of regional words for it, often built on the same root.
In the clip, Giuliano and Andrea guess Ratte (rat), then appeal to the playground hint, but the connection to riite simply isn’t available to standard-German ears — “Schaukel” shares no root with riding or gliding. The dialect patchwork is real: across Switzerland you’ll meet a string of regional variants — Gireize, Seilireite, Riitiplampe — for the one playground swing. For learners, it’s a vivid reminder that Swiss German isn’t just accented German; it’s a separate vocabulary layer.
