Zając ukrywa się przed wilkiem w śniegu

What’s the difference between “zając” and “królik” in Polish?
Polish keeps two distinct words for animals English casually calls “rabbit”: królik is the domesticated rabbit (the pet kind), and zając is the wild hare (the field-running, larger-eared kind). Many Slavic languages preserve this split. English has both hare and rabbit but uses them inconsistently in casual speech.
This clip is a winter forest scene where characters are looking for a królik and finding a zając. The visual joke depends on the audience knowing which animal is which. Polish kids learn the difference young, often from fairy tales like Pan Króliczek (Mr. Rabbit) or hunting stories where zając features prominently. Russian, Czech, and Ukrainian make the same split.
