What does “piekarnik” mean in Polish, and where does the word come from?

Bolek puts his cake in the piekarnik and gets distracted for two hours — a fitting mistake, since the word itself comes from piec, the verb “to bake.” That root runs through a whole bakery: piekarz (baker), piekarnia (the bakery shop), and piekarnik, the appliance that does the baking at home. Spot piec in a new word and you can usually guess it involves baking.

Piec is also, confusingly, an old noun for a household stove or furnace — the verb “to bake” and the noun “stove” just happen to look identical in modern Polish, both descending from the same root for preparing food over heat. So when Bolek’s kitchen fills with smoke, the pun is almost built into the language.
