What does “아삭하다” mean in Korean?

아삭하다 (asakhada)
Korean food-texture word
crisp and crunchy — the fresh snap of raw veg or fruit, not fried-crispy

아삭하다 is the crunch of biting into something fresh — a raw cucumber, a crisp apple, a stick of celery. It’s that clean, juicy snap, and Korean reserves a separate word for it: fried or baked crispness is 바삭하다 instead. So when a cook blanches cucumber just thirty seconds and shocks it in cold water to keep it 아삭하다, they’re protecting exactly this fresh, watery crunch.

The word comes straight from the onomatopoeia 아삭아삭 — the sound Koreans hear when teeth go through a fresh apple or cucumber. That sound-symbolic root is why it feels so vivid: it names a texture by its noise. Pair it carefully: 사과가 아삭하다 (the apple is crisp) and 오이가 아삭하다 (the cucumber is crunchy), but fried chicken or a cookie is 바삭하다. Korean is rich in these sound-words for mouthfeel — 쫄깃하다 (chewy), 폭신하다 (fluffy) — and 아삭하다 is the everyday one for anything garden-fresh.
