What does “줄 알았어” mean in Korean?
줄 알았어 (jul arasseo) tags onto a sentence to say “I thought/assumed that…” — you believed something was the case. The grammar itself is neutral: your belief might be right or wrong. In this clip it marks a mistaken assumption — 러시아인인 줄 알았어, “I assumed you were Russian,” when in fact you’re not — which is why it so often surfaces right as a guess gets corrected.
The clip lands on it perfectly. A Seoul taxi driver, floored by his passenger’s fluent Korean, fishes for where she’s from — “lots of Russians lately” — and she corrects him: 호주 사람이에요, “I’m Australian.” His reply, 러시아인인 줄 알았어 (reosiain-in jul arasseo), literally “I thought you were Russian,” carries the quiet concession that he guessed wrong. Mechanically, 줄 is a bound noun (“the fact/way”) and 알다 is “to know,” so you’re reporting what you took to be true — which, as in this clip, may turn out to be mistaken. Attach -(으)ㄴ 줄 알았어 to adjectives and past verbs, -는 줄 알았어 to present verbs, -(으)ㄹ 줄 알았어 for predictions; with a noun, add the copula: [noun]인 줄 알았어. Example: 시험이 쉬운 줄 알았어 — “I thought the test would be easy” (it wasn’t). Swap 알았어 for 몰랐어 and you flip it to surprise the other way: 네가 오는 줄 몰랐어, “I had no idea you were coming.”
