When do you use “liggen” or “staan” in Dutch?
Where English just says something “is” on the table, Dutch makes you choose a posture. A cat sprawled flat across the table ligt (lies), but the same cat upright beside it staat (stands). The rule extends to objects: anything tall or on legs or wheels uses staan (a chair, a car), while anything lying flat uses liggen (a book on its back, your keys). Pick the wrong one and you sound off.
The surprise is that legless things still “stand”: a coffee cup on the table staat op tafel because it sits upright, and text staat in a document. Flat objects take liggen (de sleutels liggen op tafel). Two more positional verbs round out the system: zitten for something enclosed or attached (de sticker zit op het shirt), and hangen for things that hang (de jas hangt aan de kapstok). Once you think in postures instead of a single “to be,” placing objects in Dutch starts to feel logical rather than arbitrary.
