What does “espressotje” mean in Dutch?

espressotje
Dutch diminutive warmth
a little espresso; here the -tje suffix signals warmth and ritual more than size

When Dutch speakers attach -tje, it can mark small size — but just as often it adds a note of warmth and familiarity. Espressotje — the diminutive of the Italian loanword espresso — is a good example: here the suffix is doing the cosy, everyday-ritual work, not measuring the cup. Dutch uses this ending freely with borrowed words too, which is why an Italian coffee can put on a Dutch diminutive and feel completely at home.

In the clip, the speaker wraps up a quiet Saturday morning by saying “ik begin mijn dag altijd met mijn eerste espressotje van de dag” — “I always start my day with my first little espresso of the day.” Here the -tje isn’t really a comment on the shot size; it’s the linguistic equivalent of a cosy sigh. The same move works across Dutch vocabulary: koffietje (a nice coffee), biertje (a beer with friends), broodje (a sandwich). Once you spot this pattern, you will hear the warmth baked into everyday Dutch conversation.
