What does “לעלות מדרגה” mean in Hebrew?

In this clip, Layka, a service dog in training, practices something very literal: לעלות מדרגה (la’alot madrega), “going up a step.” מדרגה is a stair or a rung, and לעלות means “to rise” or “go up” — but put together, the phrase does double duty in Hebrew. It’s also the everyday way to say someone is leveling up: taking a skill, a job, or a challenge to its next stage.

מדרגה shares its root with דרגה, “rank” or “grade” — the word for a soldier’s rank, a fever’s degree, or a job’s pay grade. So עלה בדרגה (“rose in rank”) is the same climbing image applied to a promotion or raise, and מדרגות (plural) is simply “the stairs.” For a working service dog, climbing real stairs is a genuine, practical skill to master — which makes the wordplay here almost accidental, and the literal meaning the whole point.
