What does زحمة (zuhma) mean in Arabic?
زحمة (zuhma) means crowd, congestion, or traffic jam, and it travels across every Arabic dialect. In formal Modern Standard Arabic the word is ازدحام (izdihām), but in daily speech — from Beirut to Cairo to Riyadh — زحمة is what people actually say. Stack it with كثير (ktīr, “a lot”) and you get زحمة كثير: the phrase a taxi driver, a tourist, or a city-dweller reaches for whenever the streets are packed.
The root ز-ح-م (z-ḥ-m) carries the idea of pressing or squeezing together, so the word is literally “a crowding.” You’ll hear زحمة سير (zahmet sayr, “traffic flow congestion”) across the Gulf and Levant, and in Egyptian Arabic زحمة functions as both noun and adjective — الأتوبيس زحمة means “the bus is packed.” In this Mexico City travel clip the host describes nearly every photo stop with زحمة كثير, giving learners repeated, low-pressure exposure: morning crowds, evening crowds, streets full of people everywhere — بكل محل في زحمة كثير.
