What does “yaani eh” mean in Egyptian Arabic?
Egyptian Arabic has a short, everyday way to ask for clarification: يعني ايه؟ (yaʕni eh?), literally “meaning what?” The word يعني (“meaning, that is”) plus ايه (the Egyptian “what,” replacing MSA’s ماذا) becomes one of the most-used Egyptian phrases. Travelers, journalists, and Arabic learners hear it constantly: in markets when haggling, in interviews when reporters push back on an answer, in everyday conversation when something doesn’t quite click.
In this clip, two people are confused about who is who at a costume party. “مين فارس ومين الجن؟ يعني ايه؟” (“Who’s Fares and who’s the genie? Meaning what?”).
