What does “هعدّي عليك” mean in Egyptian Arabic?

عدّى على (ʕadda ʕala) means “to pass by” or “stop by.” Between friends it often means coming by for someone, picking them up: هعدّي عليكي الساعة خمسة is “I’ll come by for you at five.” The هـ (ha-) at the front marks the future, so هعدّي is “I’ll pass by.” Said to a man, it’s عليك (ʕalēk).

The call is a tidy set of everyday lines: إزيك؟ عاملة إيه؟ (“how are you?”), من زمان ما شفتكيش (“I haven’t seen you in ages”), نخرج النهارده؟ (“shall we go out today?”) and نتغدى مع بعض (“we’ll have lunch together”). The same ha- future is in هنروح فين؟ (“where are we going?”).
