What does “circumnavigate” mean in English?

circumnavigate
A formal verb — "go around" something
to go around something difficult — not only a globe or a ship

Most learners first meet circumnavigate in history class — Magellan circumnavigated the Earth. But it has a second meaning: to go around any obstacle, problem, or difficult situation. A pilot avoids a storm by circumnavigating it. You can circumnavigate a traffic jam, a hard conversation, or a tricky rule. The globe-trotting origin is still there, but the core idea is simple: go around it.

In the clip, a pilot explains how they plan routes to avoid bad air: “for pilots, turbulence is about maintaining passenger comfort and trying to figure out where turbulence could potentially be and then circumnavigating it.” That one word — instead of “going around it” or “avoiding it” — gives the sentence a more careful, formal tone. The word comes from Latin: circum means “around” and navigare means “to sail.” So it literally means to sail around something. Because of that root, it still feels a little formal. “We drove around the roadblock” is natural everyday speech. “We circumnavigated the roadblock” sounds more planned and deliberate — you might write it in a report or say it in a presentation. You will also see it in business writing (“circumnavigating legal restrictions”) and in news articles. Once you know circum (“around”), other English words open up too: circumference (the distance around a circle) and circuit (a path that goes around and comes back) share the same idea.
