What is the “Johan Cruijff Arena” in Amsterdam?
The Johan Cruijff Arena is the home stadium of AFC Ajax and the Netherlands' largest football venue (54,990 seats). Originally opened in 1996 as the Amsterdam Arena, the stadium was renamed in 2018 to honor Johan Cruijff after his death in 2016. It hosts Eredivisie matches, Oranje (Dutch national team) games, and major concerts. The ArenA was also one of the first stadiums in the world to use a retractable roof and is a frequent stop for global pop tours. Cruijff's birthday (April 25) is now a small Dutch football holiday.
