What does “hautnah” mean in German?
Near the end, the wildlife park says you can see over 1400 animals “hautnah” — up close, right next to you. The word is built from “Haut” (skin) and “nah” (near), so it literally means “skin-close.” Germans use it for any moment that feels very near and direct, not just a far-off view: the animals are within arm’s reach. It often carries a touch of excitement — you’re not behind glass, you’re really there.
“…gibt es hier im Wildpark Lüneburger Heide über 1400 Tiere hautnah zu erleben.” — “…here in the Lüneburger Heide wildlife park there are over 1400 animals to experience up close.” Wir haben das Konzert hautnah erlebt. — We experienced the concert up close (right near the stage). Im Zoo kann man die Tiere hautnah sehen. — At the zoo you can see the animals up close. Use “hautnah” when something feels very near and real, not viewed from a distance. It works for events, people, and experiences, and usually sounds positive and exciting. Here it tells you the park lets you get right next to the animals.
