What does “wet-led” mean in British English?
In British pub talk, “wet” means drinks — beer, wine, spirits. A “wet-led” pub sells drinks and not much else. No kitchen, no meals, maybe just a bag of crisps. This is trade language used by pub owners and industry writers. It matters today because you can buy alcohol cheaply at a supermarket. A pub that only sells drinks has to work very hard to stay open — and many are closing.
In the clip, a pub expert says: “It’s very difficult for a pub that’s purely wet led, purely drinks to make money now.” The word “purely” drives the point home — drinks alone are often not enough. That’s why many British pubs now add food, live music, or quiz nights to bring people in. The opposite is “food-led” — a pub where the kitchen matters as much as the bar. A step up from that is a “gastro pub,” like the Marksman in East London mentioned in the clip. You might see “wet-led” in a newspaper: “Hundreds of wet-led pubs have shut since 2020.” Or in a business report: “The wet-led sector has been hit hardest by rising costs.” It’s the kind of word pub owners and journalists use — not something you’d usually hear a customer say at the bar.
