What does “nope” mean in Dutch?

Nope made the jump from English straight into everyday Dutch, and it’s official enough to sit in the Dutch Language Union’s own word list (Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal), tagged as informal for “nee.” It lands lighter than a flat nee — less a hard refusal than a quick, breezy no, which is exactly the tone a shopkeeper uses while turning down request after request for candy that isn’t in stock.

In the clip, a customer asks for candy brand after candy brand — Haribo, M&M’s, Mars — and gets “Nee... ook niet... Mars? Nope” in reply, the English word slipping in as the final, almost resigned answer. It’s part of a broader habit in casual Dutch, especially among younger speakers, of reaching for short English fillers and answers (nope, yep, oké) alongside their native equivalents — a mark of how thoroughly English threads through everyday spoken Dutch.
